Conserving marine ecosystems
At the present time, ocean biodiversity is threatened by:
- various types of pollution related to human activities such as chemical or plastic pollution that poison underwater fauna and flora;
- manmade emissions that result in increased greenhouse gas emissions leading to ocean acidification and an increase in its temperature;
- overfishing, which contributes to the decline of certain types of fish thereby resulting in an imbalance in the food chain. So it is important to put into place sustainable fishing techniques such as quotas, minimum catch sizes for species or the creation of protected/managed areas.
